Be sure to join Military Missions and tune into VOW Talk Radio for our show on Monday, September 5. We will be sharing our interview with the founder of Tempered Steel, Inc.
Luana Schneider was an artist and interior decorator until November 25, 2006, when she became a full-time caregiver for her son, Army SGT Scott Stephenson, after his Humvee hit an IED and he was severely injured in Iraq.
For the next four years Luana’s life was about wound care, doctor’s appointments, numerous surgeries and concentrating on Scott’s recovery. During this time period, Luana became increasingly aware of how civilians, and military members alike, were treating Scott and other wounded warriors differently because of their injuries and scars.
In May 2010, Scott and Luana decided to make a change. They started Tempered Steel, Inc., a non-profit dedicated to educating the public on how to treat wounded military members. Through Tempered Steel, Inc., wounded warriors go into the community to speak to school groups, community groups, and business groups, sharing the very personal stories behind their scars of war.
These brave men and women have survived sniper fire, the effects of Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), mortar fire, RPG fire, suicide bomber attacks, the fear and grief of war, and much more. While telling their stories, our wounded warriors expose the prejudices faced due to their differences.
These warriors teach life lessons on dealing with looking “different” and overcoming life’s challenges. They are experienced military members left with disfiguring and/or disabling injuries. Not only have they survived, but they have each made the decision to improve their lives through sharing their experiences and life changing education that can change lives.
In addition to organizing speaking engagements for the wounded warriors, as Executive Director of Tempered Steel, Inc., Luana has organized and recruited a team of top writers, photographers, and educators to show the beauty that can be seen in the lives of these severely injured wounded warriors. She is currently seeking funding for her organization, as well as opportunities for speaking engagements. She welcomes wounded military members who wish to share their stories with the public to contact her.
